NATURAL DIURETICS?

WRITTEN BY MEG EDITED BY KRISTIN GILLESPIE, MS, RD, LD, CNSC

A diuretic helps your body get rid of excess fluids by making you pee. It is recommended for people with edema, high blood pressure, UTI, and those looking into bodybuilding or weight loss.

Some fruits and vegetables have diuretic properties, and consequently, their juice form does as well. So, which juices have a diuretic effect?

Apples contain large amounts of potassium salts, an ingredient that can decrease fluid retention in your body and increase urination.

Celery is a natural diuretic, thanks to its high sodium and potassium content. It is said to help support the flushing of toxins in the body.

Cranberries encourage urination and excretion of water and sodium. It, however, does not deplete the body of potassium, which is more than can be said for some diuretic pills.

Lemons are not just natural diuretics. They can also help ease bloating and reduce stress, especially when they are juiced and served warm.

LIME JUICE

Lime juice can act as a potent diuretic. This type of juice will flush out toxins because of its high levels of bioflavonoids (antioxidants)

PINEAPPLE JUICE

Pineapples have bromelain, enzymes that can increase your body’s need to urinate. But be careful, because they can also increase your bowel movement rate.

They are high in sugar, making them unattractive choices for those with diabetes and those who require calorie carbohydrate restrictions. It’s best to consume juice in moderation.

BUT JUICES ARE NOT PERFECT
