Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder characterized by an increase in male reproductive hormones, cysts in the ovaries, and irregular menstrual cycles.

This hormonal imbalance can lead to ovulation failure and infertility. There are claims out there that spearmint tea can be helpful for PCOS. But how valid are these claims?

There is no curative treatment for PCOS, but recent studies have found spearmint effective in treating some PCOS symptoms.

A study concluded that subjects who consumed spearmint tea experienced a reduction of free total testosterone -  a hormone often the cause of facial hair.

It may help with hirsutism.

As acne is a common symptom of PCOS due to the increased androgen levels, spearmints anti-androgenic effects and can help manage acne in PCOS.

Women with PCOS struggle with weight because of insulin sensitivity. An animal study noted that subjects who received high does of spearmint experienced  weight loss.

Studies suggest that spearmint helps with the overall follicle count in the ovaries.  Another study associated spearmint oil supplementation with Graafian follicles- an expression often decreased in PCOS patients.
