What Effect Does Drinking Tea Have on

Brain Health?

Written by Sneha

It is widespread knowledge that tea is healthy.  But what effect does it have on specific organs, like the brain?

Tea and coffee contain caffeine, a stimulant that increases alertness, endurance, and energy.  That said, tea has a unique amino acid called L-theanine, which can create a feeling of calmness.

The catechin antioxidants in tea decrease the production of factors that cause inflammation in the brain. They also inhibit the production of enzymes that contribute to Alzheimer’s disease.

There are, however, other teas that are good for your brain. Gotu Kola tea is said to improve memory. And turmeric tea is said to enhance the cognitive function of Alzheimer’s disease patients.

Green tea is one of the best teas to support brain health.

Other teas produce great results for animal subjects too. For example, Rosemary improves animals' cognitive function with mild traumatic brain injury. And Gingko Biloba has been found to delay the death of neurons following exposure to oxidative stress.

Yes, tea is good for brain health, but it is by no means a solution or a cure.  The brain is a complex system, and many factors impact brain health.

For example, keeping your brain active, getting good physical exercise, avoiding head injuries and alcohol, and even maintaining good relationships are linked to healthy brain function.

In some cases, while you may not prevent them, you can delay their onset and progression with a good lifestyle.

Genes are also a significant factor in neurodegenerative diseases.

Although scientists need to explore the effects of tea on brain health more closely, you can take comfort in knowing that your tea is not only soothing but may also be good for your brain.
